Dwarf Mexican Crayfish (Cambarellus patzcuarensis)

Also known as the CPO crayfish, this vivid freshwater species is a popular choice for nano tanks thanks to its small size (1.5–2 inches), peaceful behavior, and bright orange coloration. Native to Mexico, Dwarf Mexican Crayfish thrive in tanks as small as 5 gallons, making them perfect for compact setups and desk aquariums.

Unlike larger crayfish, CPOs are much less aggressive and can often coexist with small fish and snails. However, caution should still be used when housing them with shrimp or other bottom dwellers, as individual personalities vary.

These active, curious crayfish love to explore, burrow, and hide, so be sure to provide plenty of decor, caves, and plants for enrichment. They are hardy and easy to care for, making them ideal for both beginners and experienced aquarists.
